Working with adult survivors of child sexual abuse

Two Day Course

Course Aim

Grounded in good practice, this two day course will equip workers coming from a variety of settings in health, education, social care and the voluntary sector to feel confident and informed when responding to adult (16+) survivors of child sexual abuse. With a strong focus on both emotional understanding and practical support approaches it aims to inform, raise awareness and offer opportunities for skill development to the participants attending.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:

  • explore what is meant by 'child abuse' from a variety of perspectives and consider definitions of child sexual abuse (CSA)
  • explore some common myths and stereotypes about CSA and their impact on individuals and organisations
  • recieve basic information about the legal framework when working with both child and adult survivors of CSA and gain clarity about signposting to specialist services
  • consider the consequence of CSA for both children and adults and what coping strategies might be employed by individuals to help them survive their experiences
  • explore a variety of skills and responses that are supportive when responding to people who have experienced CSA
  • increase awareness of gender and cultural issues relating to supporting someone who has experienced CSA
  • discuss organisational issues raised and action plan to address them
  • consider their own needs within a supportive environment.
